One workaround is to use a Windows Explorer enhancement I have to copy the file path to an 8.3 format that I then copy into Avidemux and that clears up a lot of the crash issues. And I never know when that's going to happen. I get crash reports on probably about half the MP4s I'll try to convert with Avidemux.
